Dr. Malinda Butler reflects on her wonderful career in education
The educational journey of Dr. Malinda Butler began shortly after she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology education from Alcorn State University in 1972. While serving as a middle school social science teacher in the Claiborne County School District, she realized that being an educator was not only a job, but it was her calling. It dawned on her that her newfound passion was a gift that would allow her to become a staple in the lives of many.

The Batiest siblings selected to participate in the Thurgood Marshall College Fund Leadership Institute
Two ambitious siblings at Alcorn State University have earned the opportunity to develop their leadership abilities. Moriah and John Batiest were selected to participate in the Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s (TMCF) 17th. The award-winning Leadership Institute is a national program intended to develop students’ leadership skills, create a community of scholars, provide companies with access to a talented and diverse student population and help students make connections that lead to careers.

Larry Goodin helps bring computer literacy to students in Haiti
As a child growing up in Natchez, Mississippi, Larry Goodin often dreamed about traveling the world. In his spare time, he would flip through the pages of encyclopedias to learn about other countries and cultures to feed his fascination with globetrotting. Now that Goodin has ascended into adulthood, he’s using his love for traveling to exercise his other passion; helping others.

Mildrette Netter White looks back at winning gold at the 1968 Summer Olympics
Every four years, the world’s most talented athletes meet up to compete for gold medals at the Olympic games. During the 1960s, one of Alcorn State University’s own not only competed in the Olympics, but she was dominate among her competitors. Mildrette Netter White, a 1972 graduate of Alcorn, snagged the gold medal in the 4X100 meter relay in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico.

Surviving the storm: Krista Davis is breast cancer free
December 1, 2015 is a day that Alcorn State University alumna Krista Davis will cherish for the rest of her life. On that day, her bout with breast cancer had come to an end. Davis humbly credits her strong belief in spirituality for aiding her in her pursuit of healing. “I was totally elated,” said Davis.

While interning as a junior strategist for The Resource Guild, a brand management, lifestyle marketing and strategy-consulting agency in Atlanta, Georgia, she was living the exciting life she’d always dreamed about.

Reaching the end of the college experience can send new alumni into a tailspin of emotions. On one hand, graduates feel a sense of accomplishment after completing a challenging four years of studying, papers, research and finals. But on the other hand, they realize that the days of hanging with their friends around campus and at school events are coming to a close.

Marquis Warford brings warrior-like intensity to Braves’ lineup
Tenacious, passionate and exceptional are all great ways of describing Alcorn State University Braves’ redshirt junior and newest wide receiver Marquis Warford. Since transferring form the University of Memphis, Warford has excelled at various positions on the gridiron this season. Warford has racked up six rushing touchdowns, four receiving touchdowns and one touchdown on a kick return against their in-state rival, the Jackson State University Tigers.

Braves defeat Grambling to repeat as SWAC Champions
Two months after the Alcorn State University Braves suffered a gut wrenching 35-34 homecoming loss in overtime to the Grambling State University Tigers, the Braves avenged the upset by routing the Tigers 49-21 to win their second consecutive SWAC Championship. With the win, the Braves became the first team to win back-to-back championships since the Tigers won three in a row from 2000-2002.
Kristina Brown named Miss Alcorn State University 2017-2018
Becoming Miss Sophomore during the 2015-2016 academic year gave senior, psychology major Kristina Brown insight into what comes with being a part of Alcorn State University’s Student Government Association. Her stint as Miss Sophomore opened her mind to bigger goals; one of those goals was becoming the campus queen.
Jordenne Taylor’s passion for sports fueled by Alcorn’s Department of Athletics
For as long as she can remember, Jordenne Taylor has always loved sports. After accepting a softball scholarship to Alcorn State University in 2013, she made it her mission to turn her passion into a promising career. “I have been involved in sports ever since I was able to play,” said Jordenne, who will earn a bachelor’s degree in sports management during the University’s Commencement Exercise on Saturday.
Rayford Mullins leaves a legacy of leadership at Alcorn
Rayford Mullins has always been destined for greatness. Ever since his youth, the Alcorn State University senior was pegged as the one to watch. His mother was, and still is, his biggest supporter, and the reason why he has grown into the leader he is today. “My mother motivated me the most,” said Mullins, who will earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology on Saturday.
Zakiya Harris reflects on her path to earning a spot in the top five percent of her nursing class at Alcorn
Zakiya Harris has always been considerate of the needs and well being of others. During her high school years, she was afforded the opportunity to dive into the world of medicine when she participated in a two year allied health program and an allied health summer residency program. The experience brought about an epiphany for her.

Lenorris Footman excels both on the field and in the classroom
Being the leader and quarterback for the Alcorn State University Braves football team can be a tough task. Besides enduring the grind of daily practices, one must also stay on top of their studies. Lenorris Footman, a criminal justice major from Monticello, Florida, has done an exceptional job at balancing the two.
